Wormley Rovers (1) 3, Romford (1) 3 – Pre-Season Friendly – Tuesday 16th July 2024
On a balmy evening in leafy Hertfordshire, Wormley Rovers and Romford shared six goals in a thoroughly entertaining pre-season game.
Both sides went at the game with positive attitudes and attacking intent and in the very first minute Boro’s Sheri Artmeladze tried to catch out his former team-mate Carlos Simeon in the Wormley goal with a long range effort that was narrowly off-target.
Romford were in front after only 12 minutes, Praise Ogbebor scoring after Boro had won possession deep in Wormley territory. Boro then went on to create some good chances, going close on a number of occasions, including a free-kick from Aundre Spencer that Simeon had to tip over the bar.
Wormley equalised somewhat against the run of play after 43 minutes when George Beattie ran onto a through pass, rounded Qamil Devishaj in the Boro goal and rolled the ball home. There was still time for Boro to go close to restoring their lead but Simeon denied Artmeladze after the Boro forward had been put through.
Substitute Amaree Robinson-Jones set up Praise Ogbebor in the first minute of the second half, but Ogbebor shot across goal, and then Devishaj made a good low save to keep the scores level. Wormley began to dominate as their second half substitutes took hold of the game, but Boro went close when a Wormley defender contrived to hit one of his own posts when trying to clear a Boro corner.
Boro went back in front after 74 minutes when Amaree Robinson-Jones ran onto a fine through ball and although his initial shot was blocked by the Wormley goalkeeper, Isaac Sijuade followed up to score. The lead lasted only until the 78th minute however, as Wormley levelled with a header from a left wing corner. The home side then went in front after 85 minutes when a free-kick was floated in from the left and flicked home despite Wayne Baker’s best efforts to keep the ball out.
Defeat would have been harsh on Boro and just a minute after Wormley had gone ahead, parity was restored when Ogbebor cut in from the right and laid the ball back to Isaac Sijuade who fired a terrific shot into the top corner of the net.
Next up is a trip to Tilbury on Saturday to play last season’s Essex Senior League champions in what will be a good test for Kris Newby’s squad.
