Woodford Town have been attracting good Friday night gates in the ESL, so a visit there this season will be interesting.
Brief History:
The history of Woodford Town is, like some other East London non-League clubs, far from straightforward. The official version, from the club’s website, is that they were originally formed in 1937 and were founder members of the Delphian League.
In 1961 they joined the Metropolitan League, and then the Greater London League in 1967. Woodford left the Greater London League at the end of the 1968–69 season and rejoined the Metropolitan League in 1970.
During the 1970s, the club played in the Southern League, the Essex Senior League, and the Athenian League. They rejoined the Southern Division of Southern League in 1982 and finished 3rd in the South Division in 1987, while also reaching the First Round of the FA Cup.
In 1993 the club lost its home at Snakes Lane and transferred to Division One of the Spartan League. Voted out of the Essex Senior League in 2003, the club’s history becomes convoluted at this point with Bush Hill Rangers and Mauritius Sports both involved in the club’s continuation. In 2017 they returned to the Essex Senior League reverting back to our original name – Woodford Town Football Club.
The club were due to move into Ashton Playing Fields in November 2020 however, this was delayed due to covid. In August 2021, Woodford played their first game at the stadium, losing 2–1 against Stansted in front of 822 spectators.
Previous Meetings:
Romford’s first meeting with Woodford Town was an Essex Senior League game played at Ferndale, then home of East Ham United, in August 1992. The game ended 1-1 with Steve Game scoring Boro’s goal. Romford met that version of Woodford Town on three other occasions, winning all three without conceding a goal.
Against the Woodford Town that stem from Mauritius Sports (all played under that name), Romford have similarly won three and drawn one, with the last meeting an Essex Senior League game played at Aveley in 2009 which Boro won 4-1.
Last Season:
Woodford Town finished 14th in the Essex Senior League last season. Their average attendance at home was 306, with the game against Stansted mentioned above attracting the highest attendance anywhere in the league. Leading scorer for Woodford last season was Richard Asamoah with 7 in all competitions.
In the FA Cup, Woodford went out in the Extra-Preliminary Round, beaten 3-2 at Witham Town, while in the FA Vase, a win on penalties over Woodbridge Town was followed by a 4-3 defeat at Hoddesdon Town.
In the Essex Senior League’s cup competitions, the Errington Challenge Cup saw Woodford fall at the first hurdle, beaten 4-1 at Sawbridgeworth Town, while in the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy they also suffered a First Round defeat, losing 2-0 at home to Saffron Walden Town.
Home Ground and How to Get There:
Woodford Town’s home ground at Ashton Playing Fields, Chigwell Road, Woodford is about 8 miles from Romford. Take the A12 to Gants Hill and then the A1400 Woodford Avenue. At Charlie Brown’s roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A113 Chigwell Rd, and the ground is on the left, where there is ample parking. The Post Code for Sat Navs is IG8 8AA.
By public transport, the 275 bus from Fulwell Cross to Walthamstow stops opposite the ground. The nearest station is Woodford on the Central Line from where the ground is a 15 minute walk.
The ground has a running track and therefore spectators can be a good distance from the pitch.
