Athletic Newham v Romford – Preview

Michael Woods24 Apr 2023 - 06:39

Curtain comes down on 2022-23

The 2022-23 season draws to a close for Romford tonight with the final Essex Senior League game of the season, the rearranged visit to the Terence MacMillan Stadium to play Athletic Newham.

This fixture has been postponed twice. It was originally scheduled for 3rd December, but had to be moved due to Boro’s involvement in the FA Vase, and then on 29th March it was called off late in the day following torrential rain.

Heavy rain at the Terry Mac as Boro’s game there in March gets a late postponement.

In the game between the two sides, played at Mayesbrook Park in February, Praise Ogbebor and George Cox scored for Boro in a 2-2 draw. The prolific Richard Kone – leading scorer in the Essex Senior League this season with 33 goals (42 in all competitions) – was one of Newham’s scorers that night in what is so far the only ever meeting between Boro and Newham.

While Boro were winning 2-1 at Halstead Town on Saturday, Athletic Newham were emphatic 4-0 winners at Saffron Walden Town. Richard Kone scored twice to take his total to 38 goals for the season. Newham’s win means that they will finish at least 6th this season, and improvement on last season when they finished eighth. They are currently one point behind 5th placed Takeley, who have completed their fixtures. Meanwhile, Romford sit 14th, but a win tonight would move Boro up one place above White Ensign.

Home Ground and How to Get There:

The club play at the Terence McMillan Stadium. The stadium has one stand with seats for 192 spectators and is named after the first Mayor of Newham. The full address of the ground is 281 Prince Regent Lane, E13 8SD, and it is easily accessible by road, being just off the A13 at the Stratford/Plaistow exit for the A112, and by public transport, with Plaistow (District Line) and Prince Regent (DLR) stations within easy reach. Buses 473 and 376 stop close to the ground.

Other Essex Senior League fixtures tonight:

With the weather causing a backlog of fixtures, the Essex Senior League has, like others at Steps 5 and 6, been given dispensation to arrange games for after Saturday’s official last day of the season, and the final four outstanding game are scheduled for this evening. They are:

Athletic Newham v Romford
FC Clacton v Saffron Walden Town
Sawbridgeworth Town v Barking
Southend Manor v Woodford Town

Later in the week, the Errington Challenge Cup Semi-Finals are due to be played. On Wednesday 26th April, Woodford Town are at home to Redbridge, and on Thursday 27th April, Barking play host to Athletic Newham. The date and venue for the Final have yet to be announced.

On Monday 1st May kick off 3pm, the Final of the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy will take place at Takeley FC, with Redbridge playing FC Clacton.
