Season enters its final month today

It’s an understatement to say that March was not a good month for Boro with just a single point earned from six matches, so here’s hoping for a better return from the five games scheduled for April, the final month of the season.

We kick off with a visit to Great Wakering Rovers this coming Saturday 5th April. Boro have met Great Wakering 43 times since 1992, more than anyone else other than Brentwood Town and most memorably, the sides met at Wembley last May in the Final of the FA Vase (unashamedly, the cover picture for this article is from that day!) That match included, Romford have won 22 and lost 17 of the previous meetings. Rovers currently occupy the last of the Play-Off places as they are fifth in the table with 64 points from 32 games, five points ahead of Saffron Walden Town who have played two games more. Great Wakering are at home to Little Oakley tonight, which will be a tough match for Rovers.

There’s another trip along the A127 or A13, depending on preference, on Tuesday 8th April with Benfleet the opponents. This will be the fourth attempt to play this match as three previous games have been postponed due to the pitch at Woodside – where Boro will be playing for the first time – having been unfit. Romford have met Benfleet just once before, the Essex Senior League game at Barking back in August having ended 2-0 to Boro. Benfleet have made a decent fist of their first season at Step 5 and would be higher in the table if they had been able to convert a few of their defeats into draws as they have just one tied game to their name to date. Benfleet entertain league leaders Stanway Rovers tonight in another rearranged fixture.

Romford’s penultimate home game takes place on Friday 11th April with our landlords Barking the opponents. Like Great Wakering, Barking are currently in a Play-Off place as they sit fourth with 70 points from 34 games and will hope to do better than last season when they lost to Boro 1-0 in the Play-Off Semi-Final.

There’s another visit to Burroughs Park on Saturday 19th April when Boro face Wakering’s tenants, White Ensign. Boro’s record against Ensign is not great, just one win in six encounters and when the sides met at Barking earlier in the season, Ensign won 3-1 against a Boro side that ended the afternoon with ten men after goalkeeper Harry Girling was sent off. White Ensign are another team playing this week, they travel to Buckhurst Hill tomorrow night.

Buckhurst Hill come to Mayesbrook Park on the final day of the season, Saturday 26th April . The teams met at Buckhurst Hill just before Christmas with The Stags winning 3-0. It was that game that signalled a downturn in Boro’s form and fortunes and leaves the sides each having won three of the previous six matches in all competitions.
